What to Say When Someone Asks: “Why Should I Use a Travel Agent?”

If you’re a new travel agent, there’s one question you’re guaranteed to hear:

“Why would I use a travel agent when I can book everything online?”

And if you’re not prepared, it might throw you off.

But here’s the good news: you can answer this with calm confidence, and even a little excitement, because you know the value you bring.

I teach my students in Travel Genius Coaching to approach these questions not with pressure, but with purpose.

Here’s how you can respond in a way that feels natural and clear.

 

Here’s what I teach in Travel Genius Coaching and what I want you to remember:

 

 

1. You’re taking the stress off their plate

Planning a trip is a lot.
There’s research, decision-making, price comparing, and fine print that most travelers don’t even realize they should be checking.

When someone works with you, they don’t have to do all of that.
They tell you what they’re looking for. Then, you bring them great options, handle the bookings, and walk them through every step.

 

 

2. You’re a real person who knows their trip

You’re not a booking engine.
You’re someone who listens, understands what they want, and makes sure their trip actually fits them, not just what’s trending.

And if anything goes wrong? You’re there.
That’s something a big-box travel site can’t match.

 

 

3. You often save them money (yes, really!)

Many clients assume travel advisors cost more. But the opposite is often true.

Suppliers, like cruise lines and tour companies, offer special promotions just for travel advisors. Those can include onboard credit, room upgrades, or price breaks. 

Plus, your guidance helps them avoid expensive mistakes. That’s value they’ll remember.

And while some travel advisors charge planning fees (especially for complex trips), those fees are often small compared to the value, time, and perks you receive in return.

 

 

4. You make travel more fun

This is often overlooked,but so important.

When you handle the logistics, planning feels exciting again. Your clients get to focus on their dream trip, while you quietly handle the details that would’ve stressed them out.

So the next time someone asks, “Why should I use a travel agent?”
You can smile and say:

“Because you deserve a trip that feels easy, personalized, and full of value. And I’ll make sure you get all three.”
