The First 5 Steps to Start Your Travel Business From Scratch (Even If You’re Brand New)

Jun 19, 2025

If you’re dreaming of starting your own travel business but have no idea where to begin, you’re not alone. The travel industry is full of opportunity. But without a clear path, it can quickly feel overwhelming.

The good news?
You don’t have to figure everything out at once.
You just need a starting point.

These five steps will help you move from idea to action without getting lost in the weeds or stuck in research mode.

1. Get Clear on Your Vision

Before you choose a name or design a logo, pause and ask:

What do I actually want this business to look like?

Are you hoping for a part-time side income? A full-time career shift? Something you can build during naptime or after your day job?

There’s no right or wrong answer but knowing your goals helps you choose the right systems, structure, and pace.

2. Choose Your Niche

This is one of the most important decisions you’ll make, so don’t skip it.

You don’t need to serve everyone. In fact, you shouldn’t. Picking a clear travel niche helps you stand out, attract the right clients, and feel confident in your recommendations.

It might be cruises, all-inclusive resorts, family travel, Disney vacations, or destination weddings. The best niche? One that fits your passion and your personal network.

3. Pick a Business Name

This step feels big, but it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Choose something clear, easy to say, and easy to spell. You don’t need a clever pun or a full brand identity yet, just a name you feel good about. This is the start of building a brand that reflects you.

4. Join a Host Agency

For most new agents, this is the smartest move.

A host agency gives you access to suppliers, high commission levels, training, and booking platforms.

Think of it like getting the keys to the industry. You still own your business, but you have a supportive partner behind the scenes.

Inside Travel Genius Coaching, I walk you through how to evaluate host agencies and choose one that fits your goals.

5. Get Legal and Legit

Yes, even a home-based business needs proper setup.

Depending on your state, that may include registering your business name, applying for a license, and choosing a legal structure like sole proprietorship or LLC.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to figure this out alone.
I walk you through the exact steps in plain English inside the course.

You don’t have to recreate the wheel.
You don’t need to sort through endless blogs or try to guess what to do next.
